CT Scan Radiation Side Effects

Computed tomography (CT) scans, often incorrectly referred to as CAT scans, uses special X-ray equipment and computers to create cross-sectional pictures of a patient's body. The diagnostic tool is used to view broken bones, cancers, blood clots, signs of heart disease and internal bleeding. However, a recent study has found that CT scans put off more radiation than originally thought, which could cause thousands of cancers each year. Furthermore, excessive CT scans can result in radiation poisoning. The report found that in the United States, the number of CT scans performed each year rose dramatically from 3 million in 1980 to close to 70 million in 2007.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will increase its oversight of CT machines to regulate the amount of radiation exposure, taking the first step in exercising a power it has thus far ignored in the past. New software has been created to reduce the radiation by half and other steps have been taken to reduce the number of unnecessary CT scans by hospitals and manufacturers. More research is needed to further prevent radiation poisoning and cancer from CT scans. In September 2009, a lawsuit was filed against GE Healthcare for lack of adequate safety features warning technicians of radioation levels and potential overdoeses.
